In this video from the Riverside Community Hospital shared in February 2016, pulmonologist Dr. Ahmed El-Bershawi briefly talks about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Dr. El-Bershawi explains that COPD can be one of two major lung diseases—emphysema and chronic bronchitis—and he describes the symptoms of each condition which include shortness of breath and a productive persistent cough.
Smoking is the number one cause of COPD, although patients can also develop the disease due to other lung irritants such as long-term exposure to pollutants, second-hand cigarette smoke, and untreated asthma.
