The Aerobika device, from Trudell Medical International in Canada, is a drug-free, easy-to-use, and clinically supported product to help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis cope with the disease symptoms — especially in the colder winter months.
The device opens up the lungs and creates vibrations in the chest, helping to thin and loosen excess mucus.
The winter season is known to bring extra risks of exacerbation or worsening of symptoms to COPD and chronic bronchitis patients. The cold wind and flu exposure from November to February can make COPD symptoms more frequent and severe.
Approximately 800,000 people have been diagnosed with COPD in Canada, but it’s estimated that as many as 2.4 million are currently living with the disease without a formal diagnosis.
COPD symptoms may include a long-lasting cough, shortness of breath, cough with mucus, difficulty walking long distances, challenges with performing daily tasks, and lung infections – all of which worsen during the winter season. Simple things like climbing stairs, blowing out candles, or just sleeping through the night can be very challenging to those who suffer from COPD.
According to a press release provided by Trudell to COPD News Today, a recent study from the University of Western Ontario reported that the daily use of the Aerobika device led to significant improvements in the quality of life among patients who have mucus-producing COPD.
The study, issued in COPD: Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, titled “Oscillatory Positive Expiratory Pressure in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,” showed that patients who used the device every day experienced improvements in exercise tolerance, in the ease of expelling mucus, in increased lung capacit, and overall life improvement after just three to four weeks.
The device can be used as a combined treatment with existing COPD prescription medications and is available now at many retail pharmacies in Canada. Patients can ask their healthcare provider for advice on how Aerobika could help.
