Explaining COPD Pathology and Treatment
In this EmpowerRN video, Caroline Porter Thomas, a registered nurse, talks about COPD and explains the pathology of the disease, how it’s treated, and the prevalence of it in the U.S.
The video is aimed at student nurses but it contains pretty simple medical language so everyone can understand. Caroline explains that COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the general term for two major lung conditions: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It’s extremely common and it’s estimated that around 24 million Americans have the disease, although around half are unaware of it. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.
Caroline discusses some of the signs and symptoms of COPD and talks about the various treatment options which are dependent on the severity of the disease.
