The video illustrates how a normal, healthy pair of lungs work and what happens to lungs in patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It explains how the alveoli (the small sacs at the end of the branch-like bronchioles) should be flexible and springy, and inflate and deflate when you breathe in and out. For patients who suffer from diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the alveoli become rigid and less flexible, expanding and retracting much less than they should, making breathing more difficult.
